The Naseby Indoor Curling Rink has acted quickly to clear up any confusion regarding a newspaper article which misunderstood the organisation was at risk of “liquidation”.
Maniototo Curling International treasurer Ken Gillespie believes he was misunderstood in a recent Otago Daily Times article, and he meant the “frozen water thawing” definition of “liquidation” and not the organisation going bankrupt.
“As I am sure you can understand I am not happy about the inference that we are going to go under, nothing could be further from the truth,” Ken said.
“Really, the main point is the interpretation of “liquidation”, he said. “The ice would turn liquid if we turn the freezers off, but the issue then becomes the clean up, as we are in lockdown and unable to join together to clean up the paint as it thaws.
“The ongoing power bills are an issue, but I would prefer to pay the bills and retain the ice as there is a lot of cost and work in redoing it.
“So better to pay the power bill and leave the ice in.”
He said the work needed to clear the ice would require a team of people, which would be in breach of 2m social distancing rules.
Removing the ice would also mean the need to resurface and repaint, which needs to be applied by a specialist Canadian team.
