A 58-year-old man has died at an event at Glendhu Bay in Wanaka this morning.

Police were notified about 9.30am, and part of Motatapu Rd was closed for a short period of time.

The man is believed to be from Wanaka, and was participating in the Motatapu off road cycling event.

It is understood the death was due to a medical event.

The Motatapu mountain bike event sees participants ride 47 kilomtres from Glendu Bay to Arrowtown.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.
