A group of Mount Aspiring College (MAC) students are putting their spare lockdown time to good use by baking for Daffodil Day.

The Daffodil Day street appeal, the Cancer Society’s annual fundraiser, was meant to take place yesterday (Friday August 27) but was cancelled because of alert level four restrictions.

People can still donate to the Cancer Society here, and the MAC daffodil group is also hosting a baking competition, calling on students to do lockdown baking, but “freeze it instead of eating it”.

The group is working with Food for Love, a not-for-profit initiative that provides meals for local people in need, and the sweet treats will be delivered to those in the Upper Clutha undergoing cancer treatment, as soon as alert level restrictions are eased.

“What an amazing group of inspiring students giving up their time to produce such an amazing gesture,” Food for Love founder Bex Sarginson said.

Lucy Fenton, a year 13 student from MAC, came up with the idea.

“I wanted to get involved because it’s personal to me with my father passing away from prostate cancer…I remember when Dad was sick, the most helpful thing was people baking and cooking extra meals for us when we were preoccupied,” Lucy told the Wanaka App.

Choosing easily frozen treats to bake is essential because lockdown level four prohibits deliveries, Lucy said.

Brownies, blondies and cakes are amongst some of the items that have been baked so far.

Other ideas for easily frozen desserts include: cookies, tarts, fruit-cakes, muffins, cheesecakes, roulades or fruit-crumbles.

If anyone wants to get involved, they can, and Lucy says the goods simply need to be frozen with a list of ingredients attached.

Photos of your goodies can be emailed to [email protected] for a chance to win spot prizes.
