Fifteen locals enjoyed after-hours access to sketch World War I (WWI) artefacts at Alexandra’s Central Stories Museum and Gallery on Tuesday evening (June 13).

The ‘Drawing night at the museum’ was hosted by local Alexandra artist Marion Vialade-Worch because she loves to sit, soak in history, and draw.

At the start of the two hour session Marion offered tips to help people to get started.

“Warm up your hand with a scribble first at the top of your paper.

“It’s time to draw with your hand and leave your mind… Keep your pencil on your paper as long as you can. Try to look at your subject more than your drawing.

“Overall trust the connection between your eye and your hand.”

Marion advised starting at the top point, and completing the biggest shape or object first to complete the outline, and then moving to “enjoy the beautiful detail, textile and shapes”.

The artefacts on show were about to be returned to the museum’s archive, and Central Stories operations manager Paula Stephenson spoke briefly about each one to the attendees, including the binoculars which belonged to her grandfather.

The women said they liked the chance to be creative and get tips from a local artist

Marion said she plans to hold more drawing sessions every few months with different themes and that she was pleased with the turnout and feedback.

Paula talked about the leather belt which belonged to Corporal JE Moreton, who was killed in action on November 24, 1916
