Around 25 volunteers helped plant 60 natives at Shaky Bridge Reserve in Alexandra on Sunday (June 19).

The hardy team, including families from nearby Kerry St, Fox St and Lookout Drive, responded to a mailbox drop calling for helpers from Keep Alexandra and Clyde Beautiful (KACB).

The plants were grown from local seed, gathered from remnant native patches.

They were supplied from the Clyde Railhead Community Eco-Nursery, which is operated by the Haehaeata Natural Heritage Trust.

KACB chair Beverley Thomson said more volunteers will be needed next year as the group plans to plant around 100 natives to continue the project.

“The more plants we can restore the more our native birds, lizards, moths, and butterflies can survive.

“We are keen for the plantings to enhance our visitors’ experience and they go for walks to the clock or around the circuit from Shaky bridge to the Old Rail Bridge.”

Bev thanked John Patterson who supplied sheep poo, the Central Otago District Council who provided mulch, and Four Square Alexandra for donating the afternoon tea.
