Central Otago locals held a party to celebrate the expected end of Donald Trump’s presidency in the United State of America.
Marilyn and Tim Flemming held the party at Clyde’s Orchard Garden on Sunday to celebrate the rebirth of democracy and the support of their friends.
Hailing from the United States of America (USA), Marilyn and Tim have generally split their time living between their home in Washington state’s Orcas Islands and their adopted home of Alexandra since 2000.
Marilyn said the decision to hold a party to celebrate the election result was to primarily thank all of their Kiwi friends for supporting them through what they consider a tough period for the USA.
Partygoers dressed in the red, white and blue colours of the USA to celebrate the rebirth of democracy.
“It is just a great occasion to thank all of our Kiwi friends for supporting us over the last four years,” Marilyn said.
“It was looking a bit scary there for a while. We want to celebrate that we are getting our democracy back.
“I just hope everyone can stop rubbishing one another and come together again.”
President Donald Trump has not yet conceded defeat and has vowed to fight against the election results, but president-elect Joe Biden is expected to eventually take his seat in the Oval Office.
One party guest described president Donald Trump as a “narcissistic numpty”.
Marilyn and Tim both have family still in the USA but haven’t been able to return home to visit due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19.
Friend and party attendee Marg Hamilton said the party was to celebrate common sense and justice prevailing, but also celebrating friendship and the welcoming, supportive network of friends gathered in Central Otago.

“It has been a really tough year because they (Marilyn and Tim) haven’t seen their family in such a long time,” Marg said.
“And coupled with that, the political situation in America, they’ve watched every day just getting more and more distraught at what was happening to their country.
“They have loved the fact their New Zealand friends have been so supportive of their views and their situation.
“So the party is a joyous celebration of America finally starting to move in the right direction.
“They are very aware it is going to take a long time, but they hope that leaders like Jacinda Ardern will become the norm, rather than the exception, amongst world leaders.
“Where humanity is the focus.”
