The spooky season is here and across the region there are free community focused non-scary events for tamariki (children) to enjoy.

The Cromwell Light Party offers a family oriented alternative to Halloween, with no scary outfits and the emphasis on fun.

It is organised by the Cromwell Combined Churches and held at Cromwell Presbyterian Church on Thursday, (October 31) from 5 -7pm.

Craft activities, games, a toddler play area, face painting, a bouncy castle and a sausage sizzle, tea and coffee for parents will be provided.

Light Parties have been held in Central for the past ten years and are increasing in popularity as a safe way to enjoy food, games, costumes and activities.

Due to pastors Sarah and Aaron More moving to Tauranga there is no Alexandra Light Party this year.

Children can also take part in activities at the Alexandra and Cromwell libraries; a Halloween party and a teddy bear sleepover

After school on October 31 children are invited to head along to the Alexandra library in their favourite costume for storytime, and a craft activity.

An Alexandra Library spokesperson said the event would be “not-too-spooky” but more about favourite book characters, sharing stories and enjoying being together.

Later in the week the Cromwell Library is hosting “‘The Great Teddy Bear Sleepover’’.

Teddies can be dropped off on Friday (November 1) between 4-5pm and collected the next morning at 10.30am (Saturday November 2).

When children come to pick up their toys, there will be a bring your own picnic and story time and a chance to hear about what the toys got up to overnight.

With Halloween becoming gaining popularity in New Zealand, online directory for parents Kidspot NZ has published safety tips if your children are trick or treating.

Tips to keep in mind:

  • An adult should always accompany kids when trick or treating
  • Time your trick or treating before it gets dark
  • Ensure kids’ costumes are not going to affect their mobility or vision, to avoid trips and falls
  • Only go to homes where you know the residents, or those displaying a trick or treaters welcome sign
  • Never enter a house
  • Do not enter a property if there is a dog that isn’t tied up
  • Only accept wrapped treats
  • Stay together, don’t run, and be wary of cars in driveways
  • Stick to the safe crossing rules and use the footpath
  • Always remain respectful of those who are not taking part in trick or treating
