The Central Otago District Council (CODC) Community Bike Ambassador course is off to a flying start, with eight people from many different backgrounds taking part in the first session held on August 10 in Alexandra.

CODC road safety advisor Chris Foggin (Foggie) was thrilled with the response.

“It was great to get a mix of people who cycle for wellbeing and fun, and those who run a business around their passion for cycling.”

The course number had been set at 12 participants, which included four people who were not able to attend on Saturday but will get a chance to catch-up on August 21, ready to join the next session on August 31.

The participants included Vincent Community Board member Tony Hammington, Bumz on Bikez social riding group leader Gaynor Sutherland, Dunstan High School teacher Kerry Moir, keen cyclist and retired school principal Doug White, owner/manager Matangi MTB Park Helen Sanders, tour company driver with Trail Journeys David Burke and guest experience manager nzbiketrails James Jackson.

The course includes practical and theoretical elements including bike skills, health and safety and common trailside repairs. PHOTO: CODC

The initiative is part of CODC's road safety Wheels Up campaign.
