Eclectic, colourful, surprising, and with just that little bit of edge.

That’s how Jane Robinson describes her warm and welcoming store Flying with Birds in Alexandra (previously Leighs).

The some-time jewellery maker, always-creative and stunningly stylish Jane has been immersed in and fascinated by fashion all her life.

“My first passion is definitely fashion, though I am loving learning the other aspects of the business, like homewares.”

Born to a farming family in Southland, she worked at iconic fashion store Yours Faithfully in Invercargill.

Just last year, the loss of a parent catapulted Jane and her husband into making some big life changes, including a move to Central to be with her wider family and the purchase of Leighs.

The store name may have changed but the staff, products and service that made the shop so popular remain.

Fashion is not the only focus of Flying with Birds which offers plenty of products to browse.

“We’ve had lots of people say ‘thank goodness you bought Leighs – we were so worried it would close,’” Jane says. “It’s got such history and has really become a destination store.

“It’s been great to have the familiar faces of Catherine and Janette stay on, too. They have so much experience and really know our customers.”

Introducing new brands is one of the touches Jane has put on the store since taking over. There are the familiar names of Trelise Cooper (NZ) and Elk (Australia) plus many others, but Flying with Birds also stocks three fresh Danish brands in Lolly’s Laundry, Rue de Femme, and Saint Tropez.

The team can often be found modelling the range of stock on Facebook and Instagram. Jane wants everyone to feel welcome, even if just to have a browse.

“If anyone wants help, we are delighted to offer advice whether that’s suggesting a dress for a wedding, colours and styles for home, or interesting gifts.”

The store sells giftware, homeware, accessories, décor, baby clothes, shoes, jewellery and fashion.

“But we do have some masculine giftware too!”

Flying with Birds stocks a range of beautiful home and giftware.

Nevertheless, when it comes to fashion, Jane and the team focus on making women feel good about themselves.

“We know through experience what works on different body shapes and sizes, colours that suit different complexions, and we will always give honest feedback if asked.

“We love helping people choose outfits that will give them confidence.

“Fashion is ageless, and we cater for all figures, from the very tiny to the super voluptuous!”
