The window of time to share your thoughts on council’s role in affordable housing is shrinking, and the survey closes on Sunday June 5.

More than 200 people have given feedback on what they think the council's role in affordable housing should be.

The Central Otago District Council (CODC) has been considering whether it has a role in the development of affordable housing.

To help guide the council's decision, a survey has been running for a month to gather community views.

As of Monday morning, there had been 213 surveys completed, largely from residents in the Vincent and Cromwell wards.

The survey invites respondents to comment on how they feel about council supporting the development of affordable housing in Central Otago, and how they feel about a proposal by the Central Otago Affordable Housing Trust for the CODC to gift one third of any of its residential developments for the trust to set up a secure homes model.

Mayor Tim Cadogan said the growth in Central does bring some challenges in our housing market and from there our labour issues.

“Please enter into this discussion; those are two simple questions but there is a lot riding on the community answers to them.”

Community feedback will be considered at the 13 July CODC meeting.

The survey can be found on the CODC website and it gives links to further information to inform your answers.
