Tēnā koutou - hello everyone.
How are you going in your te reo journey? It’s great to hear people giving te reo a go with me.
Last week, we started talking about sports, and asked the question: He aha te wā o te kēmu? What time’s the game?
Telling time is simple to do, and very useful in many situations.
But what sport are you playing?
Kei te tākaro whutupaoro - We’re playing rugby. Note that tākaro means to play.
Just replace whutupaoro with your sport of choice:
pā whutupaoro - touch rugby
poitarawhiti - netball
poitūkohu - basketball
tēnehi - tennis
kirikiti - cricket
Ko wai kei te tākaro? Who’s playing?
Te Kapa Ōpango - The All Blacks
Te Kapa Kaponga - The Silver Ferns
Te Kapa Pango Tāroaroa - the Tall Blacks.
Watching from the sidelines? You could try encouraging the players to work as a team.
Kia kaha te mahi tahi! - Do your best to work together!
Mahi tahi means to work together, or collaborate. Kia kaha te mahi tahi is a useful phrase that can be used in any context where you want to encourage teamwork.
It’s one I’ve been using with my mokopuna.
Stay safe and healthy everyone. Get out there and kōrero about sport.
Kia pai te rā - Have a great day.
