Tēnā koutou - hello everyone.
Are you upsizing your te reo? It’s great to hear people giving te reo a go with me.
Last week, we gave ourselves a bit of a head start in our journey with te reo.
This week, we’re going to look at some more of the words and phrases we already know - words we can add to our daily te reo practise.
We hear Māori language used around us more and more in everyday conversation. I find it interesting to discover how much I already know, without trying.
Let’s upsize our te reo vocabulary again.
Kai - food
Kei hea ā tātou kai? - Where is our food?
Hāngi - Food cooked in the traditional way in an earth oven.
Haere mai ki te kai hāngi - Come and eat hāngi food.
Notice the use of haere mai to mean ‘come here’ in this context.
Kaumātua - An elder, or elders
Kei te kōrero te kaumātua - The elder is speaking.
Mana - authority, power or influence
He tangata whai mana - An influential person.
Koha - a gift or donation
He koha nā taku whānau - A gift from my family
Remember this phrase from last week?
Kia ora e hoa! - Hi mate! Thanks mate!
I have another phrase for you, using the word ‘hoa’ friend. My advice to you when learning te reo is:
Me kimi hoa ako. Find a friend to learn with you.
Keep on upsizing your te reo.
