The packed stadiums of international rugby may be a far cry from playing on the frosty fields of Alexandra, but for one former Cromwell lad things have come full circle.
Wallaby Jermaine Ainsley grew up playing rugby firstly in Cromwell and then in Dunedin before moving to Perth around six years ago to be with his family.
Jermaine has now inked a two-year deal with the Highlanders that will see him return to New Zealand.
Jermaine is the son of former All Black Joe McDonnell who represented both Otago and the Highlanders between 1999-2003 and made eight appearances for the All Blacks.
Jermaine’s own rugby career started in the OBHS First XV before his move to Perth.
In 2016 he was selected for the Western Force, making his debut against the Rebels in the first round of Super Rugby that season.
After two seasons and 17 games for the Western Force, he was selected to play for the Wallabies in 2018, winning his first test cap off the bench against the All Blacks in Sydney.
He played two further tests that year during the Wallabies Northern Tour against Italy and England.

After the Western Force was excluded from Super Rugby, Ainsley joined the Melbourne Rebels, signing a deal through to the 2020 season.
Pulse Energy Highlanders Head Coach Aaron Mauger said he was excited by the acquisition of the young tighthead.
“Even though Jermaine is only 24, he already has a wealth of experience with over 50 Super Rugby games and also some exposure at test level,” Aaron said.
“The fact that he has a strong link with our region and club history makes it all the better.”
However, even more excited is Jermaine’s mother, Cromwell real estate agent Camille Ainsley.
“I’m ecstatic,” she said.
“He’s always loved having family around him, so when his contract came up for renewal this year, he made a decision to come back to his family, and his roots, to where it all started for him.”
Jermaine said he was looking forward to his return to New Zealand, ready for the 2021 season.
“I’m very excited to be coming home and be surrounded by family.
“I can’t wait to play Super Rugby in New Zealand, it’s a dream come true.”
