We continue our annual summer series where we talk to some of our local residents and ask them the best things (and secrets) about their patch in Central Otago.
Beverley Fraser is the owner of Scent Florist in Cromwell, she works with St John youth and was elected president of the Cromwell Town and Country Club.
Scent Florist is a small business, found in Cromwell Mall, and Bev says they’ve made it through the tough times of 2020 thanks to local support and changes she has made to the business. She hopes 2021 will be a better year for everyone.
Where do you live and how long have you lived there?
“We moved here in 2016, from Ashburton.”
“I love this place, Central Otago.
“I grew up in Balclutha, and spent lots of time here with my parents.”
“It’s a good place to holiday, and a great place to live.”
What do you love about living here?
“I love the climate – most of the time!”
“The people here are lovely, friendly; it’s a very welcoming town.”
If you were in charge of the town, what’s the first thing you would do?
“I’d bowl the mall and start again.”
“The mall here is not welcoming to visitors. People don’t know about the shops in the middle.
“They walk down the alleyway and past my shop, and they’re surprised there’s shops through here.
“It happens so often.”
Bev got to meet the ‘Dark Destroyer’, Shaun Wallace, when she made the Cromwell quiz team for the Clubs NZ quiz championships.
Where’s the best place for a day or night out?
“It depends whether you want a family night out – that would be the T&C (Town and Country Club).
“They do really good food.”
“But, if you’re looking for something a little bit more for the two of you, probably Five Stags, or the Black Rabbit.
“The Black Rabbit do stunning pizzas – I can recommend them.”
Who does the best takeaways?
“We usually go to Rainbow Tearooms and get their fish and chips.”
What is your town’s best kept secret?
“The great walks we have here.”
“We love the sluicings, also all around Bendigo.”
