Invercargill Mayor Nobby Clark is throwing his support behind locals establishing the new Teviot Valley Ratepayers and Residents Group.

Chair of the Invercargill Ratepayers Advocacy group, Mayor Clark gained huge support in the south for his lobby work, prior to becoming the leader of the city.

In 2019 he campaigned for a seat at the council table, and was the highest polling Invercargill city council candidate with 10,802 votes.

He won the mayoralty in 2022 convincingly over Marcus Lush 6537 votes to 3785.

Mayor Clark said he was invited to come and chat with the Roxburgh group founder Norman Marsh in the next two weeks, and was looking forward to helping the group get established.

Norman said there was a core group of about 12 people actively involved, who wanted to challenge the Central Otago District Council on their proposed business.

He approached Mayor Clark through a friend and asked him if he could help.

Norman said he was interested to hear where Mayor Clark started on his journey, and how he got to where he is now.

Setting up the ratepayers group was a long term initiative, “and not a battle we can just fight in six months,” he said.

Once he had met with Mayor Clark, Norman planned to invite him back to a public meeting for other people to hear about his background.

With about 1900 residents, the Teviot Valley encompasses the Lake Roxburgh Village, Millers Flat, Ettrick, and Roxburgh township.

The next meeting would be in the Ettrick Hall on February 12.
