Insight into merino farming in Central Merino wool, a way to keep warm and a way of life for Moutere Station farming family the Jopps

Locals can learn about the challenges of farming merino sheep in Central at the first of Heritage Central Otago‘s Heritage Talks for 2023 next week.

Jillian Jopp will talk about the history of merino farming, life on Moutere Station and what makes merino wool such a desirable fibre on the world stage.

Moutere Station was established in 1858 and has been owned by the Jopp family since 1891.

Moutere Station is in the rolling foothills of Central between the mountains and the Manuherikia River

Attendees will hear about South Island high country merino sheep - a tough breed, surviving in places and climates where other breeds struggle.

Places are limited, register online if you are planning to attend.

Entry is by koha (donation) on January 25 at 6.30pm at Alexandra’s Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery.

The Central Otago Heritage Trust (COHT) is the founding organisation of Heritage Central Otago.

COHT it was established in 2008 by the Central Otago District Council and elected by Central Otago’s major heritage organisations to represent the collective interests of organisations concerned for the identification, preservation and protection of Central Otago’s heritage.

Other wool focused events are coming up at Central Stories including exhibitions of garments from the Woolon collection and crafting sessions.
