Insider tips for Easter weekend in Central

Another long weekend kicks off today so here are some ideas of how to make the most of the Easter holiday in Central Otago if you're staying within our region.

That is if you’re one of the lucky ones, not sick or isolating due to covid-19, and you’re able to leave the house! 33% of The Central App have been household contacts of confirmed positive covid-19 cases this past week, so we feel for those locked up too.

Get cultural: visit the Dunstan masonic lodge in Clyde where the Central Otago Arts Society is holding an Easter ‘Cash and Carry’ exhibition. It’s open 10am-4pm Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Gold coin entry.

Fill your belly: It’s the last Sunday of Cromwell’s market for the season. Support local stall holders and stock up on all your favourite items such as farm fresh produce and honey.

Have some family fun: Check out the free easter hunt at Highlands in Cromwell – from 8.30am on Easter Sunday and a gold coin is required to get in. The Patearoa, in Ranfurly is holding an easter egg hunt on Saturday from 12noon for kids and adults too.

Lose yourself inside a book: Visit your local library but check long weekend opening hours first. There are also some handy kids activity packs you can grab to keep small people busy in the upcoming school holidays.

Support a local café or restaurant: Many eateries have been battling with staff having to isolate, or with staff shortages due to our border closure or with an overall business downturn as people are more hesitant about going out due to covid-19. Why not take the family out and support a local small hospitality business. Check out The Central App Drink/Dine listings here.

Go to the flicks: Central Cinema presents - this weeks movies, Roxburgh Cinema, Clyde Cinema are all showing some family friendly movies, remember your face mask as you'll be indoors.

Visit a historic place: Our region has so many to offer including museums, gold mining sites, churches. Many of these are free entry or a gold coin donation is all you need. Why not combine a this with a bike ride or a hike and a picnic.

Enjoy some home baking: This one caught our eye: Hot Cross Bun Ice Cream sandwiches, yum!

Overall, have a safe and happy Easter from The Central App team.
