High pressure is continuing to cause frosty starts and foggy valleys across Central Otago, with temperatures dropping as low as -6.5°C this morning.

MetService meteorologist John Law said that low was felt in Omakau, while Alexandra dropped to -3C.

He said the high pressure sitting over the country had brought the perfect conditions for widespread frosty mornings, and in some cases valleys had become hidden beneath a blanket of fog.

“In the best of the sunshine today and tomorrow we will see temperatures reaching 9C or 10C but where the fog lingers longer, temperatures will struggle.”

Among the areas that had struggled to see any sunshine yesterday due to fog were Cromwell and Wānaka.

John said the high would hang over Central Otago throughout the weekend, so the forecast was for a “continuation of the story”.

“It’ll be a similar story for Sunday before we start to see some slightly less cold nights next week.”
