Heavy snow has closed roads and disrupted travel across Central Otago and Otago area.

MetService’s Orange Heavy Snow Warning remains in place until 11am Tuesday, with additional snow expected to settle above 500 metres, and 10 to 20cm above 800 metres across the Mackenzie Basin and northern parts of Otago.

Lindis Pass, SH85 between Kyeburn and Palmerston, SH1 from Palmerston to Dunedin, and the Kyeburn–Outram route are all closed. Caution is advised on other roads throughout the district.

Drivers are urged to avoid travel unless essential and ensure they carry chains, warm gear, and emergency supplies.

Another burst of snow is forecast before midday tomorrow (Tuesday 28 October).
