Heavy rain warning for lake headwaters - road snowfall warning

The MetService has issued a heavy rain warning (orange) for the headwaters of our lakes overnight tonight (June 30).

An active front, preceded by strong northwesterlies, moves eastwards across New Zealand later today and Monday, bringing heavy rain to western areas.

Expect 110 to 140mm of rain about the main divide, and 70 to 100mm within 20km further east.

Heavy rain is forecast for Wānaka on Monday morning falling as snow on the Crown Range and Lindis Pass. A road snowfall warning is in place for both alpine passes with 3-4cm of snow expected about the respective summits on Monday morning.

Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.

Chains should be carried if travelling on alpine passes.

Check Roads and Weather.
