Harbourmaster Steve Rushbrook has been out on the water in Cromwell this week and is reminding boaties that “it takes three to ski”.
"We have picked up a few reoccurring issues where people towing biscuits and skiers have not had an observer,” he said.
“Lake Dunstan is a busy lake and the skipper should only focus on where they're going.”
Riverton visitors Tony and Katrina Anderson, with sons Bridg and Lynk, always make sure they have one or two observers on board
On the plus side, most people have been compliant with life jacket usage, apart from the odd stand-up paddle boarder, deputy harbourmaster Pete Dryden said.
“Paddleboarders are also required to wear a lifejacket and preferably the leash.”
As the region enjoys superb summer weather and access to beautiful waterways, it is timely to remember a grim statistic: drowning remains the leading cause of recreational death in New Zealand and the third highest cause of accidental death.
