For the fourth time, the three day cross country mountain bike race ‘The Prospector’ is being held in Central, with the district’s scenery and hospitality being a drawcard for participants.

Race director and Alexandra local James (Jimmy) Williamson is interviewed on The Outlet podcast today sharing insights into the race, which will take place from March 8 to 10.

Jimmy said the event is accessible to town, has a friendly and fun atmosphere and showcases Central’s world-class trails to the rest of New Zealand.

“[The course] is the best riding in the area. Stunning views once you get up . . . you do a bit of climbing, but then obviously you get rewarded with some big descents as well.

“It's definitely got a bit of everything, some technical trails . . . really fun riding, some hard grunt work as well to get the reward. We think it offers a bit of everything to every mountain biker.”

The race is made up of three varied days; the prologue is 18 km at Matangi Station mountain bike (MTB) park, featuring rocky climbs and fast trails.

Day two, known as ‘stage one’ is 56 km at Earnscleugh Station, encompasses Conroys Dam, Omeo Gully, a river crossing, stunning views and a 3km downhill descent from the Hawksburn range.

Day three, known as ‘stage two’ at Matangi Station, is 58km, starting at the woolshed in Little Valley.

It includes a short gravel road section, rolling hills, rock features, water race trails and more climbing.

There are options to suit entrants' expertise and fitness; some complete the whole race solo or as a pair.

The options include a relay where participants ride the prologue together and then split the stages, and there is a single day individual race, and an e-bike category.

This year The Central App has partnered with the event to bring readers in-depth coverage, rider profiles, spectator tips as well as race results.

Managing director Vicki McLean said The Prospector MTB race is a wonderful homegrown event, which epitomises the values of The Central App.

“We want to promote events which help the wellbeing of our community and assists them in getting out into our stunning countryside."
