The 2021 Mitre 10 MEGA Festival of Sport, which was scheduled for this weekend (October 15-16) has been postponed.
In a statement the Upper Clutha Sports Community Trust (UCSC), which organises the festival, said the postponement was “due to the challenges associated with Covid 19 alert level restrictions”.
“This now means that both the speaker series due to be held on Friday (October 15) and Saturday (October 16), and the Expo/Have-A-Go Day on Saturday, will not go ahead,” UCSC secretary Diana Schikker said.
Diana said the have-a-go-day would be challenging at alert level two due to the close interaction with participants, and exhibitors having to thoroughly clean equipment after use.
“Many of our have-a-go activities would have needed to be run on a one-at-a-time basis which takes away a lot of the fun and joy of being all together,” Diana said.
“If we did have lots of people all turn up at the same time, then managing those numbers would have been challenging for a small team of volunteers.”
Diana said the UCSC was grateful to the clubs and sponsors involved in the festival who have made every effort to see the event take place.
UCSC is reviewing options to determine a date for the delivery of the festival.
