Festival of Sport and Recreation to go aheadThe festival exists to bring people together to showcase and celebrate the sport and recreation opportunities in the Upper Clutha.

Organisers of the Mitre 10 MEGA 2021 Festival of Sport and Recreation have confirmed the event, scheduled for October 15-17, will continue as planned.

The event was cancelled in 2020 due to uncertainty around Covid-19 alert level restrictions however this year organisers are taking an optimistic view that the event can proceed.

“Previous festivals have shown that sport and recreation continues to bring our community together... just what we’re all going to need as we come out the other side of these recent Covid-focused months,” Upper Clutha Sports Community Trust (UCSCT) trustee Bronwyn Coers said.

The UCSCT is calling for sport related businesses to register for booth space at the expo day (Saturday October 16) and said a good number of club registrations have already been received.

“It will be great to have all these clubs at the expo to tell everyone what they do, where they do it, how well they’re doing it and of course, how we can all do it too,” UCSCT trustee Diana Schikker said.

Activities this year will include a ‘Dye Dash’ and a duathlon.

“There’s room for many more but spaces are limited so clubs and sports organisations are encouraged to sign up now to ensure they don’t miss out.”

The festival provides an opportunity for the community to learn about activities available in the Upper Clutha and is anchored by the club and business expo day on Saturday October 16 at the Wānaka Recreation Centre from 10am-1pm.

Organisers are in the process of confirming the full programme which may include a motivational sports speaker evening, a sports speaker breakfast, ‘Have a Go’ sessions, and family fun events.
