Central’s 65th festival of spring fun kicks off on Friday (September 23), and many people are involved in last minute preparations ahead of the big weekend.

Alexandra Blossom Festival event manager Martin McPherson said things were shaping up well with nine princesses entered in the parade this year, more than in the past few years.

“Eight pipe bands will be making a fair bit of noise… there are some new things to look forward too as well, including Bollywood dancers, steam punk and diesel punk.”

Martin said the response to local pre-sale tickets had been good so far, and he has been restocking the outlets selling tickets regularly.

“Free entry tickets and ride tickets have gone out to all primary schools in the district.”

The event is made possible due to around 500-600 people who volunteer to help across the weekend with various tasks such as staffing gates, building floats and making flowers.

“A lot of people in the background are unsung heroes… this wouldn't be possible without the community [contribution].”

Martin’s top tips for the weekend are; park up early (and do not park on Centennial Ave); bring appropriate clothing, be prepared for sun as well as a potentially cool wind; if you’re going to Friday night’s mardi gras the best viewing spot for the fireworks is above the clock on the hill.

Tomorrow (Tuesday September 20) the 2022 Senior Queen will be crowned at a special afternoon tea and fashion show event held at the Alexandra District Club.

Five Central women have been nominated from clubs and individuals for Senior Queen in recognition of their contribution to their community.

It will be the 26th time a Senior Queen has been named. Tickets to the 2pm event are available at the district club on the door.
