Emerging Artist Scholarship announcedCaitlin Shea of Alexandra has won a $5,000 scholarship to support her professional art development.

Dunstan High School student Caitlin Shea (18) has won the Central Otago Art Society (COAS) inaugural Emerging Artist Scholarship.

The $5,000 scholarship was set up to support the professional development of a promising visual artist connected to the Central Otago region.

COAS had 13 applicants for the scholarship and the committee said Caitlin’s application made it clear she had a long-standing passion for the arts, and a strong commitment to developing her practice.

“Her work reflects both evolving skill and dedication, with a growing depth of understanding of her chosen medium.

“Her intention to study at the Otago Polytechnic School of Art shows real commitment to building a career in the arts, and with the strong encouragement and support of her parents, she is well placed to succeed.”

Caitlin will be introduced during opening night of the Alexandra Blossom Festival exhibition, and will work towards exhibiting at the flagship awards in 2026.

When contacted, Caitlin said she was stunned to find out she had won the scholarship.

“I was so excited I didn’t know what to say.”

The money would be used towards her first year’s course fees, which are more than $9,000.

Enjoying painting since primary school, Caitlin said she was inspired by Van Gogh and had evolved her art skills over the years through both her study at Dunstan High, and from art classes with Marion Vialade-Worch.

Meanwhile, the arts society was looking forward to this year’s Blossom Festival where guest artist Julie Greig would be the guest exhibitor and judge, with this year’s theme being ‘Black and White.'
