A significant upgrade of the Cromwell pool will take place this month.

The existing sand filters in the 25-metre pool and spa pool have served the community for about 40 years and are now being replaced with a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly alternative.

These innovative filters look like sand filters, but instead of using sand they utilise glass from upcycled green and brown glass bottles.

The glass is soft to touch and is 100% bio-resistant, therefore reducing the risk of bacteria and parasites forming within pool water.

Central Otago District Council aquatics manager Carly Getson was excited by the upgrade.

“This not only represents our commitment to sustainability but will also continue to deliver crystal clear water for pool users.

“The new filtration system will result in lower chlorine consumption, reduce frequency and water required for backwashes resulting in reduced operating costs. A win-win all round.”

The filter replacement is set to commence on Monday, June 24 and is expected to take about three weeks to complete.

During this period, the 25m pool and spa pool will be closed for up to 10 days.

Work will be carried out on the pools separately so two pools will be available for users throughout the upgrade.

“We appreciate the community’s understanding and patience during this time as we work to enhance the swimming facilities,” Carly said.

The project is funded through the Government’s Better Off Funding scheme and Council capital works programme funding.

The lap pool and spa pools will be closed for one week of the school holidays between July 6 -14, however the therapeutic pool will remain open.

Swimming lessons in the lap pool for Term 2 will be shortened by two weeks.

This adjustment has already been reflected in the fees.
