Drivers will continue to face delays at the new bridge being constructed over the Clutha River at Beaumont, with a new detour being the latest development.

People who use SH8 in Beaumont will be able to use the detour from Monday January 16, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency said in a statement to media.

“To keep everyone safe while the western road approach is built, drivers are being diverted onto Dee and Westferry Streets for the next two to three months,” Waka Kotahi journey manager Nicole Felts said.

“This will add an extra five minutes or so to journey times. People should factor this into their travel plans.”

The diversion is approved for all vehicle types (including 50Max, HPMV, overweight and over dimension vehicles).

The work will involve a full dig-out and rebuild of the existing highway past the Beaumont Hotel.

Construction crews are aiming to complete all the main road connections to the new bridge over the summer construction season.
