Central Otago recorded 123 new covid cases yesterday, the second highest daily figure since April 1, when 137 new cases were reported.
Numbers released by Southern District Health Board (SDHB) show Central Otago has 554 total active cases. The total figures for Southern are 1410 new positive cases and 6699 active cases.
Dunstan Hospital had three people admitted with covid-19, Dunedin 27, Southland 8 and Waitaki 2. None were ventilated or in ICU.
Central Otago District Council Mayor Tim Cadogan said he doesn’t want people to become complacent, or thinking we are through this, when the opposite is the case.
“Central is still on a climb with rolling daily averages of covid…
“I know we are all over this pandemic and just want to see it behind us, but the message is that we are not out of this yet, and even though mask requirements have been relaxed, we still need to be vigilant here in Central for a wee while yet, especially for those who are vulnerable,” Tim said.

Dr Hywel Lloyd, Southern DHB Covid-19 Response Lead said wearing a mask, wearing it properly, and practicing physical distancing, as well as being fully vaccinated and boosted, is the best defence we all have against catching covid-19 and stopping the spread of it to our loved ones.
SDHB urged all people in our community to continue to wear a mask when in public, especially when indoors.
By continuing to wear a mask when in public, and wear it correctly, practise good hand hygiene, and stay home when you’re sick, we can all help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect the people we care about.
