Today is the Cancer Society’s annual street appeal ‘Daffodil Day’, and residents can do their bit by wearing yellow and giving what they can.
Across Central, journalist Jo McKenzie-McLean is remembered after her recent death after battling cancer (April 30, 1978 - July 25, 2023).
She wanted to use her media platform to advocate for improved cancer care for all people in New Zealand.
Jo produced an award winning podcast and publicly shared her journey through cancer treatment, giving people and families affected by cancer hope for a future with better cancer outcomes in New Zealand.
Community groups have rallied to support the cause again this year. The Central Otago branch of the Vintage Car Club (VCC) held a ‘Daffodil Rally for Cancer’ last Sunday in Cromwell (August 20).
Organiser John Martin said he was thrilled to gift $1,200 to the Cancer Society (CS), made up of visitors’ gold coin gate donations and a $10 entry fee per car.
“We had 56 cars and three motorbikes take part… people mooched about and talked about all things cars.”
Five entrants were awarded prizes and donated goodies were raffled. John thanked local businesses for their support including Highlands, Repco, Plumbing World and BP workshop.
A vote took place and VCC members indicated next year they’ll do more than show and shine, and hit the streets for a short rally.
Alexandra gym NRG is holding a Daffodil Day fundraiser (gold coin entry) with a 21 stage spin mega class to match the Tour de France distance, with yellow dress up optional.

This is the 33rd year of the national appeal, involving 8,000 yellow-clad volunteers hitting the streets for collection. Daffodil Day street collectors will be out and about today, and donations can be made at any ANZ branch, or via a daffodil day QR code or online at daffodilday.org.nz.
To talk with someone about available support call Cancer Information Helpline 0800 CANCER (226237). CS has supportive care available for the community based out of Alexandra Community House, including a coffee support group on the last Monday of every month from 10 - 11.30am.
