A man allegedly responsible for a spate of break-ins around Cromwell has been arrested and is in police custody awaiting trial.

Sergeant Regan Price said police from Cromwell, Alexandra and Omakau executed a search warrant on July 23 at a Cromwell address, and a 23-year-old man was charged with several burglaries and drug offences.

The offender was a local person who is known to police and several items related to the burglaries in early June were located at the address.

The offender was caught on CCTV footage biking around the hangars at the Cromwell Aerodrome one Sunday morning, and Cromwell Police recovered his gloves that he dropped, and took fingerprints off the doors.

A commercial property in Ripponvale Rd was also broken into several weeks before the aerodrome, and a gun safe and electric bike stolen from a business workshop.

As a result of the forensic evidence gathered from the different scenes, police were eventually able to make an arrest.

“The burglaries he has been charged with include the hangar and Ripponvale burglary as well as two others,” he said.

Because the matter was now before the court, Sgt Price said he couldn’t comment further.

Police would like to thank the public for their assistance during the investigation.
