Covid-19 update: 27 new community cases, 33 in MIQ

There are 27 new community cases of Covid-19 and 33 in Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) facilities today.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health said there are 16 new community cases in Auckland, five in Waikato, two in Bay of Plenty, one in Rotorua, two in Hawke's Bay (Te Kūiti), and one in Wellington.

Of the five new cases in the Waikato today - two in Hamilton, one in Ngāruawāhia, one in Whitianga, one in Coromandel town - three are unlinked.

The positive case in Wellington attended the Britomart Block Party in Auckland on New Year's Eve.

Anyone who attended the event between 11pm and 2.30am must immediately get tested and isolate, the ministry said.

There are 35 cases in hospital, including one in ICU in Middlemore Hospital.

One new case in Northland in the Hokianga area was reported today after the daily cut-off and will be included in tomorrow's figures.

This case was linked to a known case in the Hokianga and was already in isolation as a close contact when they tested positive, the ministry said.

The number of cases at the border have been increasing as the new year started, with experts worried the highly transmissible Omicron variant may leak into the community.

The ministry has said it expected Omicron would be the most prevalent variant among cases at New Zealand's borders.
