There are 165 active cases of Covid-19 in the Central Otago community headed into the weekend, including 20 new cases reported today.

The Central App understands there is one confirmed at Cromwell College.

Two teachers were also confirmed to have Covid-19 at Dunstan High School earlier this week.

Daily figures from the Southern District Health Board show Covid-19 has taken hold in the district and across the southern region, including 1226 active cases of Omicron in Queenstown Lakes.

Of those in Queenstown Lakes, 131 were new cases reported today.

There were 627 new positive cases reported in Queenstown Lakes yesterday, bringing the total active in the region to 6824.

This includes both PCR and known RAT test results.

Further south, one person has died in an aged residential care facility in Dunedin, who had tested positive for Covid-19.

"This person was receiving palliative care", a Southern District Health Board spokesperson said.

"There were pre-existing medical conditions, which contributed to this death and as such, it would be inaccurate to report that this person died as a direct result of Covid-19 infection."

There are 4433 active cases in Dunedin (321 new), 380 in Invercargill (55), 240 in Waitaki (40), 175 in Southland (30), 165 in Central Otago (20), 100 in Gore (20), 95 in Clutha (10) and Queenstown Lakes 1226 (131).

Here are the key messages from the SDHB:

  • Only get tested if you have symptoms or are a household contact of a confirmed case. We need to ensure those who are symptomatic, or a household contact, get access to testing.

  • If you test positive on a RAT test you do not need to have that confirmed by PCR – you are a case. Please update your My Covid Record with your result. Call 0800 222 478, option 3, if you need any support to do this.

  • If you receive a text notification that you are positive, please do the online survey in the link you receive in the text message as soon as possible. This will ensure you can receive the appropriate care and support when you need it. Please be aware that, after filling in your My Covid Record with your positive RAT result, there can be a 24 hour delay before you receive this text message.

  • Make sure you and your family have a plan to self-isolate or care for vulnerable family members in case this is needed. Start to have these conversations now – before you need to have them.
