Construction of Alexandra's long awaited Countdown supermarket is under way.

A large team of workers have been on site, in Centennial Ave, over recent weeks, completing all the necessary ground work before construction begins.

Project Manager Francois Swarts said more than 250m3 of concrete had been poured last week, which had a been a large team effort.

"We have our team of eight from Breens here, along with subcontractors, like plumbers doing the under slab, concrete trucks and pumps.

"The guys have been stripping boxing and reinforcing foundations.

"By the end of Friday the outer footprint foundations were all poured."

More concrete pouring is to come, with about 50% of the foundations to be poured by the end of this week.

Countdown’s director of property Matt Grainger said he was pleased to see things under way.

"Locals won’t notice a lot of change on the site at this stage, as much of the work is being done on the foundations in preparation for the arrival of the steel and tilt slab.

"We're looking forward to seeing the frame of the building starting to be constructed in the next couple of months."

The project is on track to open late in 2022.

Matt said the team was looking forward to delivering a brand new Countdown store to the Alexandra community, which was predicted to create about 50 new jobs in the town.
