Cromwell’s Anderson Park was buzzing yesterday afternoon as the Highlanders regional roadshow stopped off for a meet and greet with local fans.

The community event was held on field one and two for an hour from 3.30pm in scorching sunny conditions of 29 degrees Celsius.

About 80 youngsters got to work on their rugby skills with players, including passing, dodging, relays, practising with tackle bags and also taking turns on an inflatable obstacle course.

Ice blocks were passed out to children by organisers and players at the conclusion of the games, while many parents sought shade under the trees at the edge of Anderson Park.

Beau Burns-Smithies, (10) from Goldfields Primary School enjoyed the tackling practice.

Carter Dickson, (10) from Queenstown Primary School weaves and dodges with the ball in hand.

Fans got to chat to players, take photos, collect signatures and Highlanders merchandise was given away, including flags and posters.

Cromwell College year eight student Sophia Kimpton said it was cool to meet the players and collect autographs.

Team work and timing was crucial for relays with inflatable balls that had to be rolled around Highlanders players.

The roadshow, which stopped in Ranfurly and Wānaka earlier this week, will visit Alexandra next with a community event at 3.30pm at Pioneer Park today (February 1).

Highlanders media and marketing manager Amanda Gould said as a team and a club their purpose is to inspire the south. “We hope we can do that through our performances on and off the field.

“We’re excited for [the] 2024 season to begin and for our hard work in the pre-season to come together on the field.”

Local construction company Breen has sponsored the regional roadshow.
