Clyde Earnscleugh Rugby 10s on today The Clyde Rugby 10s tournament is on today.

The sixth annual Clyde Earnscleugh Rugby 10s tournament is on today at the Clyde rugby grounds.

What started as a fundraiser for a grounds upgrade, and a bit of a pre-season get together, has now become a regular fixture in the rugby calendar.

Eugene Rudd says the tournament aims to give the community a chance to watch some rugby before the start of the season proper.

“(The tournament was) originally thought of by Cory Crosbie, who was a player and coach club to promote the club, the area and to give players a chance to have a run before the start of the season, as well as a day out for families to enjoy with activities for the whole family.”

Male teams featured include Pakuranga, Clyde and Alexandra, while female sides include Alhambra, Southern, Taieri and Green Island.

The teams are 10 players plus rolling subs. The format of the game is faster than the standard 15-man version, with 10 minute halves.

“It is a chance for people to come out and enjoy a day in the sun (hopefully) and watch some rugby before enjoying the evening with friends at the club rooms, which will be open after the games,” Eugene says.

“Pakuranga always perform strongly.

“This is the first year when female teams are participating so it is an exciting development.”

The club is hoping for a strong spectator turnout to witness some competitive rugby.

There will be food provided by Subway, Eat Humble Pie, Clyde Playcentre, Mr Whippy, as well as activities for the kids and face painting.

Kick off at 10:30am and finishes about 5:30pm.
