Te Whatu Ora Southern (Southern District Health Board) said it may need to revisit plans for Clyde’s new birthing unit.
Te Whatu Ora Southern director of midwifery Karen Ferraccioli said the procurement process for Clyde is ongoing, but there has been an increase in construction costs since the initial planning phase.
“We may need to look at the planned building to see if efficiencies can be found in the design,” she said.
Karen said the team was committed to the current procurement process and no decisions will be made until all information has been thoroughly reviewed.
“We will keep the public informed of any developments.
“Te Whatu Ora is committed to establishing the primary birthing units in Central Otago,” Karen said.
In late August 2022 the community had the opportunity to provide feedback on the plans for the new birthing unit at Clyde’s Dunstan Hospital.
At that stage, the 550m2 birthing unit included two birthing rooms, postnatal stay rooms, a community space, whānau room, consultation rooms, and a secure courtyard with toddler playspace.

A local mum, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was disappointed to hear about the plans possibly being dialled back.
In Wānaka a luxury lodge was purchased by Te Whatu Ora last winter which is being renovated to become a primary birthing unit. The opening date is yet to be confirmed.
