Christmas lunch returns to St Enoch’sPast community Christmas lunches have been well attended

A festive and free community lunch on Christmas Day makes a welcome return to Alexandra this year, after Covid-19 restrictions prevented last year’s event.

The event is organised by the Alexandra Clyde Lauder Union Parish and supported by the Rotary Club, and attendees will enjoy a BBQ, desserts and general festivities at tables under the oak tree between St Enoch’s and Alexandra Community House.

The event starts at noon on Christmas Day and is open to all.

“Christmas is for everyone,” Reverend Andrew Howley said.

“We don’t care why you come. Everyone is welcome.”

Previous lunches have attracted a range of people. Some are locals without family nearby; others are overseas workers on holiday visas spending Christmas a long way from home.

“People come for all kinds of reasons,” Andrew said. “We usually end up with a potpourri of nationalities and ages.”

There’s no requirement to be a churchgoer.

“It’s a true community event.”

St Enoch’s in Alexandra is hosting the Christmas lunch

Alexandra Rotary is providing funding and bodies, but extra volunteers are needed for the day to help with the set up, serving, and clean up. Volunteers will join in with the lunch.

“People are always very generous,” Andrew said.

“Volunteers will often show up with a salad. Sometimes people who have been given an extra ham through work might donate it to us, or attendees from the orchards might contribute fruit.”

At least 100 people are expected to attend, in line with past years, but Andrew is unsure how the current economic climate will affect numbers.

If you are interested in attending or volunteering, or if you have a donation to make, please register here to help with planning for catering.
