Police have charged a 69-year-old man with three counts of careless driving causing injury after a crash on the Ida Valley-Omakau road on April 26 this year.

The crash involved two vehicles, a mini which was part of the rally ‘Mainland Mini Meander’ and a 4WD vehicle.

It was reported that the mini was driving through Oturehua township, when a local motorist in a 4WD was pulling out into a u-turn manoeuvre and was hit.

The crash resulted in the road being closed for three hours and two rescue helicopters being called to the small township of Oturehua.

Two ambulances, two helicopters and four firefighters worked to get two people out of the vehicles and airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.
