Women's soccer is proving popular in Central, and for the first time a league is being set up for the 2025 season.

Central Lakes teams are recruiting for players and women of all ages and skill levels are welcome with games kicking off in March.

A core group of local women have been working hard to get the league formalised for 2025, following social Sunday matches in the 2024 season that alternated between four locations - Queenstown, Cromwell, Wānaka and Alexandra.

Over the ten week season full sized field games were played if numbers permitted, or seven or nine a side.

Organisers are hoping to involve players from throughout the district to grow the sport as a whole and to also provide a way for girls in rural communities who may not have a club or team to join to stay in the sport.

The Alexandra Womens’ team fundraised for uniforms and gear - culminating in uniforms, backed by local businesses arriving in June 2024. Before then, they were borrowing gear from Alexandra United Football Club’s junior teams.

To join in you need boots, shinpads, a water bottle and a good sense of fun.

There are women’s squads regularly training in Alexandra and Cromwell, with the support of the Alexandra United Football Club and Cromwell Football Club.
