Central Otago high school pupils are building more than just a future, they’re helping to build a real house.

Facilitated at their Cromwell yard, Breen Contruction have partnered with Otago Polytechnic to deliver the BCATS (Building, Construction and Allied Trades Skills) level three programme.

Pupils from Dunstan High School, Cromwell College and Wakatipu High School participate two days a week, getting hands-on carpentry training in a real-world construction environment.

Guided by experienced professionals including one of Breen’s project managers and health and safety manager, students are working, together with professional sub-contractors, to construct an 82m², two-bedroom transportable cottage.

Breen has opened up the space on which the cottage is being built and has designed the home, provided full specifications, sourced materials, supporting the build every step of the way.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to support the next generation,” said Breen Construction managing director Lindsay Breen.

“These young people are the future of our industry, and this initiative gives them the confidence and experience to build something meaningful, literally and figuratively.”

The house will be for sale by or before October 2025.
