Central Otago curlers are once again throwing stones on the international stage.

Olivia Russell and Holly Thompson, both of the Ranfurly Curling Club, are part of the New Zealand Mixed Curling team competing at the 2024 World Championship in Aberdeen, Scotland this week.

Auckland curlers Brett Sargon and KJ Fourd make up the remainder of the team.

The curlers earned their spot in the New Zealand team by winning the New Zealand Mixed Championship held in Auckland in June.

The team spent time training in Kinross with the Australian team before heading to Aberdeen.

KJ Fourd said that time allowed the players to start ‘’building as a team’’.

“We had a good practice game against the Aussies, the team dynamic is coming together, and our communication's going well,’’ he said.

The Mixed Curling World Championships started on Saturday, and New Zealand already has two wins under their belt - a 6-1 win against Hungary and 10-6 win against against Czechia which was played at 12am this morning.

The team is set to play Philippines next, with the game to be played at 4am New Zealand time.

Pool play continues until Thursday, with the final medal round on Saturday.
