Alexandra Police have made their first confiscation of gang insignia since the new law came into effect last month.
Senior Constable Graham Perkins said police stopped a vehicle on the Alexandra-Clyde road on Friday and asked the driver to remove his Headhunters supporters t-shirt.
The man, who was a disqualified driver and known to police, was obliging, and after police smelt cannabis, also admitted to having an ounce of the class C drug in his vehicle.
His vehicle was searched and they found 31g of cannabis, scales and a quantity of cash, along with a further two Headhunters supporters t-shirts, and a meth pipe.
The man was charged with disqualified driving (third and subsequent), possession of gang insignia, cannabis for supply and utensils.
A Headhunters supporters t-shirt was confiscated by police in Alexandra last Friday night.
Snr Const Perkins said another confiscation of gang insignia was made by Queenstown police last weekend.
Alexandra units also stopped a Dunedin man in his early 30s at Shingle Creek last weekend, who was wanted by police for supplying large amounts of cannabis between the two areas.
He was currently held in police custody awaiting a court appearance.
A 52-year-old Alexandra man will spend Christmas in prison awaiting trial after a serious assault in Ashworth Street a week ago.
Snr Const Perkins said the man visited the victim with a baseball bat and started hitting him about the ribs and arms after an altercation.
He left soon after on a pushbike and police conducted a scene examination. The offender was not located at his address but eventually found him several days later at another house where he was promptly arrested.
Snr Const Perkins said he was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault with a blunt instrument.
Because of the seriousness of the charges he was currently held in custody in Queenstown awaiting a court appearance in March 2025.
