A prohibited fire season remains in place as the fire risk lifts to extreme levels in some parts of Central Otago.
A prohibited fire season means a total ban on outdoor fires and the suspension of all previously granted fire permits.
These zones include the towns and areas surrounding Cromwell, Clyde, Alexandra, Roxburgh, Omakau, Ranfurly and Naseby.
“The warmer and drier weather, the increased risk of fire danger there is,” a Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) spokesperson said.
“If we get windy days, it will exacerbate the fire conditions, and it can spread rapidly.
“The long history of significant vegetation fires in the area shows how careful we need to be at this time of year.”
Authorities are reminding people it only takes one spark to start a wildfire. Wildfires can pose a significant risk to life and property.
Anyone mowing (especially beside roadways) or undertaking any other action that may ignite a fire due to sparks, should remain vigilant and take all preventative measures to prevent dry vegetation from igniting.
