Calling all local artists A selection of last year’s mural art

The call is out for local artists to beautify telecommunications cabinets with murals in Central.

Chorus is partnering with Central Otago District Council (CODC) to transform five Central cabinets and artists are encouraged to get their designs in by August 31.

Last year’s project was so successful that Chorus, CODC and the Central Otago District Arts Trust are now looking to extend its reach further.

Chorus community relations manager Jo Seddon said it makes sense to partner with local councils, as they have the same goal in mind when it comes to street beautification.

“It is great to work with local councils when it comes to choosing cabinets and designs as

they know what their community needs,” she said.

“Central Otago District Council and the Central Otago District Arts Trust have nominated a further five cabinets this year and we’re really looking forward to seeing what local artists come up with.”

These cabinets become works of art in the street, often telling stories about the communities in which they are located and help beautify the local area.

Parks officer Nikki Aaron and Arts Trust coordinator Rebekah de Jong will again be coordinating designs and artists this year.

Nikki said it is a great opportunity for artists to showcase their talents to the community and the wider world.

“This is a win-win for our communities. Not only do we get fantastic art works in our

streetscape, but it also provides work and promotion of our local artists,” Nikki said.

The winning design for each cabinet will be chosen from entries received. Five Chorus cabinets have been chosen – two in Alexandra, and the others in Cromwell, Patearoa and Ranfurly – that local artists have a chance to beautify.

Information can be found on Chorus’ dedicated webpage and examples of existing Chorus murals can be seen here.

Finished art will be considered for the 2023 Chorus Cabinet Art calendar, copies of which are sent around the world.
