(Update: 2pm July 19): Central Otago District Council (CODC) advised a boil water notice is in place for Omakau and Ophir.

Residents and visitors to Omakau and Ophir are advised that a boil water notice will remain from 1pm due to high river levels.

Please boil all water used for drinking, food preparation and cooking, and cleaning your teeth until further notice. Bring water to a rolling boil and boil for at least a minute, then allow it to cool naturally.

There will be drinking water tanker in place from 2pm at Omakau School.

For more information about boil water notices including frequently asked questions and a flyer produced for food businesses with advice from the Environmental Health team head towww.codc.govt.nz/bwns

(1pm): CODC maintenance department is advising residents living in Ophir, Ida Valley and Galloway areas to head home as river levels are anticipated to continue to rise and alternative routes to these areas are long.

Central has woken to a very soggy morning due to heavy overnight rain which is continuing at 7.30am.

Flooding is affecting most roads in our district and Fulton Hogan has recommended if you can put off your travel to do so.

There are several road closures in Central, many in the Danseys Pass area due to flooding, ice and snow. Check the Roads button on The Central App to stay updated.

The State Highway south of Kingston is closed due to flooding, so too is SH 6 between Makarora and Haast, and the Lindis Pass. Updates on these roads are due at midday.

The Crown Range is also pretty wet, with high winds up there and rock and debris slipping down onto the road. With more likely to fall throughout the day, it's important you reduce your speeds and be prepared to slow down.

Along with flooding there may be some surface slips, so please if you must drive take care and drive to the conditions, slowing down and allowing extra time for your journey.

There's also the possibility of snow in the day as temperatures drop and this rain continues. Pack your chains if you have to travel.
