Police have released the name of the man whose body was found in Lake Wanaka on New Year's Eve.

He was 32-year-old Cody Jervis, a New Zealander who had been living in London.

"We extend our condolences to his friends and family at this tragic time," a police spokesperson said.

Cody's body was found in Lake Wanaka, near Waterfall Creek and police had initially put a call out to help identify him.

Police now want to speak with anyone who had been in the Wanaka Mount Aspiring Rd area, near Ruby Island, or the nearby lake track between Waterfall Creek and Edgewater Hotel in Wanaka.

He is described as an athletic Caucasian male, who was wearing a light blue top underneath a dark coloured jacket, dark coloured pants and white sneakers.

They also want to talk to anyone who spoke to him, or saw him between 9.30pm on Saturday, December 30 and 7.30am on Sunday, December 31, or who might have found or moved any clothing or personal items on the beachfront, or surrounding area at Waterfall Creek between December 30 and January 1.

Information can be provided to police by calling 105, referencing the file number 231231/9558.
