Several ducks have been found dead or paralysed on the Cromwell shoreline recently.

An Avian Rescue Otago spokesperson said they were working with Lake Dunstan charitable trust to determine what had caused the birds to either die or become injured.

"If you find one that is unable to walk, uses its wings to try and move, or is unable to hold its head up then please contact us as soon as possible.

"Avoid allowing your dogs to eat carcasses around this area as well."

Speculation on the groups Facebook page was that the cause could be a botulism outbreak, or that some ducks had been at another contaminated water source such as a stagnant pond.

Avian Bird Rescue Otago is a not for profit organisation, which cares for a large range of birds, both wild and domestic.

You can email [email protected] or call Alan on 027 324 5099 if you find a duck that needs help.
