Big bucks for council bossQueenstown Lakes District Council chief executive officer Mike Theelen.

Queenstown Lakes District Council CEO Mike Theelen has been given a $20K pay rise.

Mike, who's been in the role since 2016, will see his pay packet rise from $356,619 per annum to a whopping $376,289.

Councillors approved the 5.5 per cent pay increase on Thursday (October 28), following the standard annual performance review.

Mayor Jim Boult said the raise reflected the CEO's commitment, performance and leadership through Covid-19.

"The pandemic has been challenging for the community and for council, and Mr Theelen has consistently delivered throughout a time of uncertainty and steered the organisation to keep delivering through some extremely difficult times.

"And whilst we may be heading towards a new normal there are still big challenges ahead that will see a lot of change for local government and the services it delivers."

Jim highlighted the Three Waters reform, Resource Management Act reform, and the Future for Local Government review as upcoming demands for the council, along with continued pressure of growth.

"He and his management team have created an engaged organisation with a culture of learning that will stand QLDC in great stead to be responsive, agile, and future fit."

Mike joined QLDC as CEO in February 2016 and was reappointed for a further five years in November 2020 (effective from February 2021).

He was previously the Christchurch City Council's general manager of strategy and planning
