Good Bitches Baking (GBB) Central Otago and Queenstown delivers homemade treats for those most in need of kindness, and they need more people to join up.

Co-head bitches of the Queenstown and Central Otago chapter Kate Holland and Viv Madsen-Ries said they would love people to join their baking group for Alexandra, Cromwell, Arrowtown, Wānaka and Queenstown.

The charity is a community of bakers, rostered monthly or by selecting a spot using the GBB online booking system.

Kate said they need to entice some more bakers on board.

“[Our bakers] come from all walks of life and all age groups. We are always needing more bakers in order to meet the requests of the recipients.

“We realise there are quite a few charities in the area helping our community in the current economic environment.”

In Central Lakes the 51 volunteer bakers provide GBB goodies to ten recipient organisations, including; Baskets of Blessing, Foodbank Cromwell and Wānaka, Able Minds - Alexandra, Cancer Society, Happiness House, Alzheimers Society, Remarkable Mums, Lakes District Hospital, and Central Lakes Family Services.

In an average week this means 22 deliveries of what Kate calls “boxes of kindness and virtual hugs” to individuals supported by these community services.

“[Not] everyone can bake and deliver on specific days each month and that is the beauty of our organisation. We ask what their schedule preference is and then fit them into the roster… We always have spots that are unfilled and try to juggle around and see if any of our good bitches can fit an extra bake into their schedule.”

It is up to recipients to distribute the baking themselves (for example Able Minds gives to participants attending on the delivery day). Each lot of baking has a list of ingredients on it, and also a note from the baker.

Good Bitches Baking (GBB) started nine years ago in Wellington and has grown to 29 chapters around New Zealand.

The charity said its mission is to make Aotearoa the kindest place on earth.

Members of the charity want to turn the insult of ‘bitch’ on its head with the controversial name.

In their view being a good bitch isn’t a bad thing. On their website the group paraphrases both Tina Fey and Madonna: "Bitches get stuff done".

The group has approximately 3000 volunteers who bake for 300 organisations across New Zealand.
